memorial keepsakes
Keep your loved ones close to your heart
cost: $100+ time: 3-6 weeks
Memorial Glass Keepsakes are formed through a special process that combines colour and cremains within a glass matrix to create a treasured heirloom.
Because such a small amount of ashes are required to create these pieces, Memorial Glass Keepsakes are a creative alternative or addition to traditional cremation memorial services, like storing ashes in an urn or scattering ashes in a special location. This process also enables multiple individuals (family/friends) to have their own Memorial Glass Keepsake forever.
Tara understands the sensitivity of losing a loved one and creates every piece with respect and care. All pieces are handmade by her using traditional glass making techniques using Tara’s 20+ years of experience. With numerous shapes and colours to choose from, glass memorials can be as unique as your loved one.
Please read the following information to learn more about the process. Pictures shown are for advertising only and shared with permission from the client (out of respect for the loved one).
How it Works
Each keepsake requires about one teaspoon of ashes. If mailed, the ashes should be sealed and doubled-bagged as required by the post office. Upon arrival, you will be contacted by Tara and informed of your production date and processing time. Ashes will be labeled and kept safe in Tara’s home office. If you are interested in an in studio viewing session please contact Tara for details.
Starting with a small amount of clear molten glass, your loved one’s ashes are combined with coloured glass crystals of your choosing. The colours available include Cobalt, Aqua, Cranberry, Purple, Lime, Emerald, Red and Amber. You are encouraged to ask about custom colour options as well. The hot glass is then tooled and swirled with the ashes to create a spiral. The nest step is to gather more clear, molten glass over the ashes, encasing and thus protecting them inside forever.
Keeping the glass in constant motion, one hand turns the pipe while the other shapes using steel, wood and even paper hand tools. The glass cools throughout the process becoming unworkable and is reheated in a large heating chamber, called the glory hole. This process is repeated until the finished look of the piece if formed.
The calcium phosphates inside the ashes create a variety of white flecks, bubbles and mysterious colours that are as truly one-of-a-kind and celestrial. After the final shape is formed, the keepsake is placed in a temperature-controlled kiln to slowly cool. Orders are packaged and gift boxed with the utmost care and include tracking information. Any unused ashes will be returned with your finished Cremation Glass Keepsake.
